Start with the decision and how often it recurs
If you need to assess one hire, investment or proposed transaction, a scoped model may answer the immediate question. If management repeatedly faces connected decisions without a consistent reporting and review process, ongoing support may be worth discussing. Write down the outputs and responsibilities before choosing the engagement format.
Define what a modelling project should deliver
Agree the inputs, assumptions, scenarios, checks and handover. Explain who will use the model and how it will be updated. An editable spreadsheet alone does not establish that the business has adopted a useful decision process. If training or a review meeting is needed, include it in the scope and fee.
Define what the ongoing role should own
A continuing role may coordinate management reporting, challenge forecasts and support commercial decisions alongside the existing finance team. Clarify who prepares the underlying records, investigates variances and approves actions. The engagement should identify meeting frequency, support between reviews and work that requires a separate project.
An illustrative hiring brief
A business wants to know whether an extra employee is affordable. A model can compare the full cost, ramp-up and customer collection assumptions. If the business also needs to monitor actual performance each month, investigate margins and revisit hiring decisions, the ongoing review work needs an owner. That owner might be internal management or an agreed fractional CFO role; it is not created automatically by delivering the model.
Compare the complete scope
Ask whether the proposal includes preparation work, documented assumptions, revisions, review meetings and handover. A project may develop into recurring support, or the business may be able to maintain the output internally. Agree the next step from the evidence rather than assuming one arrangement is always preferable. The services overview and costs guide explain how these workstreams can fit together.
